Safety Surfaces for Playgrounds and Children’s Climbing Frames
Safety flooring is not a requirement for domestic climbing frames and it is often the case that a good layer of grass is safer than some safety floorings particularly those which need to be enclosed. For example loose safety surfaces such as bark, rubber or wood chippings need to be used with some kind of barrier or a pit must be installed otherwise the loose chippings will spread all over the garden.
Barriers used with loose safety surfaces like chippings, such as railway sleepers actually decrease the safety level of the flooring itself. Although rubber chippings or bark might provide a bit of a softer landing if you don’t have a particularly good layer of grass in your garden and any tumbles do occur, railway sleepers used with this type of safety flooring can pose danger also.
Many people have different views on which safety flooring is best, and barriers used to enclose some safety surfaces can add an extra obstacle for children to fall over when running around the play frame but also are not nice to fall onto. The advantage of using wood chippings or bark is that it is a natural material however it will need to be regularly 
topped up. Also, loose chippings used as a safety flooring will get dragged across your garden and can get everywhere, in shoes and clothing etc. so can be a messy flooring to have installed.
Rubber bonded safety floorings are a popular type of safety surface used with children’s playsets. The bonded flooring or rubber mats are not as messy as they do not have loose bits which can be dragged across the garden and so on. However, one thing to watch out for with rubber safety matting is that it is maintained well and there are no edges curling up or mats coming apart which can cause a trip hazard. As long as rubber matting is regularly checked it can also be a great safety flooring.
The good thing about rubber bonded safety flooring is that it does not need a barrier to keep it in place around the climbing frame or play area it is 
used with. Therefore the risk of kids having another obstacle to trip over or break their fall is greatly reduced making it a pretty safe option for use with climbing frames and play equipment. A lot of public parks or school playgrounds feature a rubber resin bonded safety flooring as it is easy to maintain, clean and highly absorbent.
Wet pour surfacing is also a popular commercial safety flooring used with children’s play equipment. Wet pour is a type of rubber safety flooring which uses small rubber granules to create a soft safety surface which is seamless and it is also available in many different colours for fun and decorative flooring in playgrounds, nurseries, schools, pubs and even with domestic play equipment.
